An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

Neither do I nor any of the gods, however. I have seldom heard of them turning down a request that would benefit a good portion of the population. Should the same curse be inflicted upon my person, I am aware that it would be most inconvenient.

I am not a pagan, nor do I have any concern for any of your wars. However, Ms. Grey - you are an anomaly. And I do tend to make it mission to solve that at the very least.

Fair enough. Coordinate with Conan Edogawa and Merlin. Yeah, I know Conan's a kid, but at this point we're all kind of anomalies. If you can get Alladin in on this, that might not be a bad idea.

Alchemy and meds are one thing, but there's the remote chance we could do something with the runes.

[Conan listens very seriously. He's not glad -- that is entirely the wrong emotion for this moment. Neither is he relieved. It's more an acknowledgement of the truth of Samantha's words -- they are going to make sure that mistake is not made again. That's a fact.]

We've got some good ideas on how to make sure of that. One in particular you'd need to be in on.

[She nodded and turned to her work, the tension leaving her shoulders. This was easier to talk about. Shifting blame bothered her, but she was a lot easier going about plotting and planning ways to fix this, as he'd already noted.]

What's that one? I prefer not to know a lot, but at this point... Honestly, you're going to need to do something that will make it not matter nearly as much to keep me under control. You'll need to gag me and make sure my hands, feet, tail and eyes are firmly bound so I can't do more than wiggle. Unless my powers grow before next time...

I don't want to say too much -- for the same reason -- but it would involve tattooing a rune.

Since as useful as that would be, it would also require a lot of trust on your part, I'd like you to outline again what your limits are before we go into the meeting.

I have some reluctance to coordinate with Conan, but that has nothing to do with youth. I'll aid where I can.

The runes? Have their been advancements on those things?

Hence why I mentioned Merlin. And yeah, the runes are getting worked on like my potions all the time. I don't know for sure that we can do anything with them, but it's worth a thought.

Tattoo?

[The way that she looked at Conan, it said a lot. There was suspicion there. A runic tattoo implied something permanent, something ongoing and something that might never go away. She frowned.]

I'm not saying no... but I haven't said yes yet. What kind of rune, and how would this work?

A tracking rune. When necessary, we would trace the rune onto a map, use that to directly locate you.

Are you open for lessons? I've found I've been due a state of reinvention. I must keep methods current.

[Her fist clenched, and it was clear she was weighing this. What Conan was suggesting was basically a leash and a tether. She would have to trust someone else, someone who could betray her, to know exactly where she was at all times, or at least have the option.

It was worse than house arrest. It was humiliating, degrading and a little terrifying. It was also almost necessary now.]

I need to know how it works first. Normally, I want to not know, but you're suggesting branding my body with magical writings, Conan. I take that very seriously.

Potions only. I'm not good enough with runes to really teach them yet. If you're going to do that, I'm hiring you on as an assistant, and you're getting a license together. We might have one other employee at some point. We'll see.

Hired? I have not sent in application for any such employment. What in blazes are you speaking off?

Well, as much as we both know I give two figs about what's legal and not, the fact is I'd rather not lose my license. It'd be inconvenient using back door deals to get supplies. So, if you're going to train under me, it has to be as an employee until you have a license yourself.

It's not as if there's a properly imposed system of justice in this fair city. I think you could do away with a fair amount of things

There is next to none, though Utgard has its own rules. If you want to look into this under the table...

Well, what's the old phrase? "We never had this conversation, and you don't know who you bought your illegal supplies from?"

The most interesting we come across in our mortal spans of life are found under the table.
