An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

Who's Eridan anyway?

The word for it is 'kismesis.' It's like a mix between a lover and a rival. We shout at each other, try to best each other and show each other up, and when the mood gets right, we slam each other to the wall and tear into each other.

He's a purple-streaked, lightning horned, finned and arrogant bastard... just the right kind of arrogant to keep me irritated constantly.

Trying not to think about the latter is surprisingly easy though, in both situations. Thinking about other people doing that kind of thing isn't something he wants to think about. Nope.]

Yeah, I know. It's confusing. Trolls have different kinds of romance. It gets really hard to follow. But yes, we're dating... well, hate dating.

[Demonstrations involve kisses, Jane. You sure you even want to think of those?]

I've learned ways to deal with it. I don't want to be a danger to people, and if I am, I'm a danger to myself. So tea, runes along my spine, meditation, whatever it takes not to lose control again.

[Jane, you should so ask her what she started doing to control herself after she dreamed of home.]

Well, does it all help? The tea and the meditation and the...the runes? [A pause.] What are runes, exactly?

[samantha_grey]

The runes? [She turned a little and ran her finger up along her spine, over her clothes.] Loki put them onto the bones of my spine. They... dampen the hormones that tie to my instincts, but when they get really bad on a new moon it pretty much puts me into a pain-filled coma for the day. That, along with the tea... it's been enough so far.

[She always had those on hand.]

It doesn't change that I have the instincts to hunt, to take whatever I want, but at least it's more under my control instead of the other way around now.

[Yes, yes she did. Do you want to know about sloppy xenophiliac cross-species mating, Naruto? She'll scar you for life.]

Yeah, so anyway... what else did you want to know?

Well, that's good! It's good to do that, then.

[She still peers curiously.] I'm afraid I haven't heard a thing about runes here, though. Is that some other sort of magic in Asgard? [It's said hesitantly, as if "magic" is an unfamiliar part of her vocabulary.]

[She took out a piece of paper and drew a line of runes. It looked like an ancient alphabet arrayed in a straight line.]

Arrays of these, in lines or circles, using inks made from things like the magically active herbs. It traps some of the energy of this world inside and funnels it for a minor effect.

So, yes, I suppose you'd call it some of this world's magic.

[She comes closer to squint at the runes.] And those little lines can really do such grand things...?

Oh god... you got him to help? Well good. he needs to get more of a sense of humor, and his mind off of other things. What did you two do?

The ink more than the words. The words focus the direction of the power's flow. The ink imbeds a focus point for the energy. It can do certain things, but not others. It's very limited in how potent it can be... though it can be impressive.

You remember that sparkle rune that I made a while back, we decide to place some on people's weapons. We were just going to go after Sasuke sword but then Naruto figured there were a whole bunch of other people with swords too.

That's the fun of it, they didn't actually know it was us! We had a sword cleaning stand and dress up as local girls.
