IC Inbox - Asgard Eventide

An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

[She was taking a good portion of her day working on boiling down dragon's blood. The project was anything but pleasant to deal with and she was forced to wear clothes she'd already treated with a diluted sample of the blood just to deal with the contained heat.

However, while the room had the feel of a sauna on the inside for her employee, she was still listening for either a banging on the door or the sound of the doorbell ringing.]

[Knocking hard wasn't something to worry about. Almost everything Karkat did, he did loudly.

The weather was kind of cold. Luckily sweaters were his default anyway. Not that it helped a whole lot, but it was better than nothing.]

[There's a muttered something from the other side. He doesn't have to wait too long before a small panel opens to show a red eye through a little glass hole. It slams shut and the door opens to a gust of hot air.

Samantha's standing there with a very thin sheen of sweat. She jabs a thumb back behind her and steps in to let him follow before the door closes. The shop is small, moreso than one might expect. There's the counter, a few shelves with stored over-the-counter remedies and a single table on this side of it with a couple chairs.]

You want something to drink? Hope you don't mind the heat. I was working on something.

YEAH. WATER IS FINE.

[He shrugged a little. It was pretty damn hot, but he'd live. Probably. Comfort wasn't the reason he came anyway. Sam obviously had something she wanted to tell him about, and if it would clear up any mysteries as to what he was doing before he left, or hell, any mysteries about any of this, then shit yeah he wanted to hear it.

He decided to just take a seat. Seemed like the rational thing to do.]

You've got thirteen questions by the way. I'll be back with the water.

[Yes, she'd written them down, for no other reason than to be needlessly anal about it because she thought that was funny. She was back shortly, a glass in front of him and something else in front of her.

Even from here, it smelled rotten, like moldy leather. She took a swallow and made a face.]

But, I had a few questions, didn't I? You want to go first or me?

[One had definitely become at least two.... at least.]

[Meaning he doesn't actually have anymore. Not yet. This conversation could change that.]

[She took a second with that sip to collect her thoughts.]

Ok, so... I'm trying to figure out something in your culture, and I feel like I'm walking in a field of land mines. Your relationships get really complicated, and I still don't know how you haven't all killed each other...

Well, actually you kind of did based on what a few told me.

Is it really common to end up getting along great with someone who hates the guts of someone you're seeing?

So, yeah. I'm seeing one of them, and I'm trying to figure out how to talk to some of them when we usually get along, as long as the subject of my kismesis doesn't come up.

[The way she said that word didn't sound quite right. She wasn't used to it. She used the word because it was what she thought Eridan wanted used. It suited their crap, kind of, but she knew for a fact that she barely understood it.]

[He rolled his eyes, taking a steeper drink of his water before firmly planting it on the table.]

[She snorted and laughed when his voice hit a higher volume, shaking her head. There was a smirk on her face and she waited for him to finish, tapping her finger on the table.]

Doesn't work that simply. They tend to bring El Douchebag Presidente when other things come up. Like, when Fef disappeared, it came up. It's made things awkward, and I'm not sure if I've just stepped in it with him, or if there's a way to fix this.

I'd be fine never mentioning it to the crazy bastard, but... I don't think either of them's able to let it go, and it keeps dragging me in.

[Oh wow.

Based on what she's saying, it's pretty obvious who she's talking about.]

First of all, you have terrible taste in lovers. Just letting you know that right now. I bet you get it a lot, but whatever. You're getting it again.

Next, it isn't your problem! The next time they try to drag you into it, just say you'll have none of it. If they bring it up, tell 'em you're not having that conversation. If they keep nagging you about it, tell them to shut the fuck up.

Yes I do, and I'm getting used to it. I'm not as much a prize as you might think either, but we'll save that for another time. Just... fin-rot's not the only one with blood on his claws.

Yeah, Sollux is kind of an asshole.

No offense, but most of you are assholes some of the time, so I'm definitely getting used to bad reactions. Still, I'm not going to blame Sollux. I kind of like Feferi, so long as she doesn't get that weird look in her eyes while she's carrying her trident.

Those... were some unpleasant talks king douche and I had.

[She sighed and reached up to grip her forehead, rubbing it.]

I'll figure something out, now that Fef's back, but I'm going to take my time with it. God. I'm just waiting for someone to flip out on me for being in a relationship in the first place.

You're allowed to do whatever you want. If it's working out and not hurting anybody...

[A pause.]

Eh. It isn't always their own problem, but yeah. If this goes the way it's supposed to go, it's not their damned problem. They don't have to hear about it anymore and they can just leave me with my terrible taste, fucking with the idiot.

[She grunted and reached her head up to her forehead while she took another drink and made a face at the liquid inside.]

So...that solves that, I guess? Great job.

[He takes a few gulps this time.]

Is that it then?

[She pondered that for a minute. Was that really it? There was a frown and she looked away with a grunt.]

Yeah, probably, unless you have any tips I should know about on troll-human stuff. Normal relationships are hard as is.

Well.

I can't really tell you from experience but from what I've seen the trickiest part is dealing with the fact that humans only have the one quadrant. Might make it difficult for a troll to feel emotionally fulfilled, at least from a common sense standpoint.

But hey, whatever works works. I've given up on bitching about it. Humans and trolls are different, and it looks like the best way to make it work is compromise.

Then again, I guess that's true no matter what, so whatever. Old news.

Yeah, we've had to compromise on that. You and I both know I'm going to feel like second fiddle for him, Black or not, pretty much always. You have no concept how self-conscious I feel thinking about Fef...

[She grunted and downed the rest of her drink in a gulp that resulted in sputttering and coughing gags, eyes bulging. Oh god, that had been a terrible idea, such a terrible idea. That was not meant for gulping. After a second, she calmed and closed her eyes.]

I'm not getting in the way of two of his quadrants. It's just... the Red. If it doesn't work so easy, I'll have to work on my jealousy or we'll figure something out.

To be honest I've never met a troll that didn't date a human exclusively. I think that says a lot about how far human-troll relationships can really go.

Then again, it's a pretty new concept. Still don't think it's what's best, but whatever. A lot of bad ideas end up working out.

Humans can get pretty damned demanding. Half demons and demons are even worse than that. But, even as much as people try to warn me, it's hard to see this idea as worse than dating in general for me.
