An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

Hel and I don't see eye to eye.

I've talked with some of the others, but there's limits to what I've gotten out of them so far. What I'm going to call it is 'financial help in my research' seems to be the order of business so far. I haven't gotten a whole lot further than that.

As for faith, though, this isn't the same thing. I lost any glimmer of faith a long time ago, Sherlock. I was born on the wrong side of the war of the angels and demons, and according to them I'm damned from birth, and cannon fodder for 'my side.' The pagans want nothing to do with me with rare exception. I'm pretty much a shit-out-of-luck abomination on their own with the promise of being fucked at the end of their days and to live until then as my asshole father's guinea pig, washed in the blood of my friends.

Faith? Can go fuck itself.

However, I'll make deals with powerful beings that help me and those I care about. Right now, I'm hoping we can get some ideas together before this happens again. If we're lucky, we've got three months to plot.

Neither do I nor any of the gods, however. I have seldom heard of them turning down a request that would benefit a good portion of the population. Should the same curse be inflicted upon my person, I am aware that it would be most inconvenient.

I am not a pagan, nor do I have any concern for any of your wars. However, Ms. Grey - you are an anomaly. And I do tend to make it mission to solve that at the very least.

Fair enough. Coordinate with Conan Edogawa and Merlin. Yeah, I know Conan's a kid, but at this point we're all kind of anomalies. If you can get Alladin in on this, that might not be a bad idea.

Alchemy and meds are one thing, but there's the remote chance we could do something with the runes.

I have some reluctance to coordinate with Conan, but that has nothing to do with youth. I'll aid where I can.

The runes? Have their been advancements on those things?

Hence why I mentioned Merlin. And yeah, the runes are getting worked on like my potions all the time. I don't know for sure that we can do anything with them, but it's worth a thought.

Are you open for lessons? I've found I've been due a state of reinvention. I must keep methods current.

Potions only. I'm not good enough with runes to really teach them yet. If you're going to do that, I'm hiring you on as an assistant, and you're getting a license together. We might have one other employee at some point. We'll see.

Hired? I have not sent in application for any such employment. What in blazes are you speaking off?

Well, as much as we both know I give two figs about what's legal and not, the fact is I'd rather not lose my license. It'd be inconvenient using back door deals to get supplies. So, if you're going to train under me, it has to be as an employee until you have a license yourself.

Only if we must.

It's not as if there's a properly imposed system of justice in this fair city. I think you could do away with a fair amount of things

There is next to none, though Utgard has its own rules. If you want to look into this under the table...

Well, what's the old phrase? "We never had this conversation, and you don't know who you bought your illegal supplies from?"

The most interesting we come across in our mortal spans of life are found under the table.

give me a call ahead of time next time you're planning to come over for research in that case. I'll get you used to the stuff I work with.

At the very least it will be an educational experience for both of us.

Always. Don't be surprised if some of it blows up in your face, or more likely leaves you sick for a day or two. Some of this is noxious stuff.

My sort of experiment. One cannot discover if one does not take risks.

Not universally true, but it has a funny way of coming to pass one way or another, doesn't it?

I find it to be the thin line between accident and genius.

Now that, I can't argue with. Most of my best magical discoveries came completely by accident as much as anything. Nearly froze the house to death learning my first real spell.

Considering this is coming from the girl who fed me god knows in the middle of a war, it is not that far a leap.

Hey, I told you what it was going to do. We were just testing durations you know.

I only consented because the war was dull.

Hah. Well, I gotta admit, getting your tongue hit with magic Novocain is definitely one way to liven a day up.

I do wonder what you've managed to cook up for the next war, Ms. Grey.

I'm working on powder bombs. It's an old trick from Japan in my world. Fill an egg with a bit of powder, pepper and other nasty crap, toss it in someone's face, and it stuns them for a second.

I'm seeing if alchemical ingredients can be mixed with talcum powder. If it works, I might get short bursts of nasty effects like that.
