An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

[And any thought about asking about age went out the window. He was either nuts, or he'd been on the upper end of the totem pole at one point. That wouldn't be the first time she'd seen this either.]

How far up the command chain were ya, if you don't mind me asking one asshole to another? I was pretty much at the bottom... as in half-breed of a piece of crap underling bottom.

[No one said he couldn't be both, though. ...Not that he was actually crazy, but that depended on how one looked at it. This is where he hesitates though, because he isn't sure he wants to explain what being a "god" was back home.]

Pretty high up. I didn't even have a real body, just happened to be energy concentrated enough to imitate one.

Ah. Your world handles that sort of thing differently. Everything where I came from had a physical body except the really rare ones. But I'm betting every world's different.

Probably. Fairies work the same way too, and they're fucking everywhere.

Faeries? You mean the kings under the hill or little butterfly-winged pixies fluttering around?

The latter. They're irritating pests at best, unholy terrors at their worst.

Yeah, if they're the sorts of stupid tricksters stories used to make them out to be for us, they'd be a pain. I know illusions enough to know I hate illusionists.

They're irritating because they're stupid. Bastards have almost no sense of danger or restraint, which is why they're also dangerous.

Well, I know this is going to sound a little on the stupid side, but they are fairies. They've got brains the size of thimbles. You wouldn't expect much from a bird either, I'd bet.

They don't even have brains. And even birds have some survival instincts.

Heh. You've got some really stupid pixies and nixies then. I'd offer my condolences, but at least you don't have to deal with that crap here, just other sorts of crap.

Crap's crap. [sip] Sometimes it's better the devil you know than the one you don't. Sometimes the other way around.

I lean towards the ones I don't myself. Little more nerve wracking not knowing what they're like, but I've got too many issues with the ones back home.

Yeah, it is a bit six of one, half dozen of another between the two. I'd rather deal with neither, but in the meantime, I've got the shop and research to tend to.

Can't say I've really found much to do other than the library.

That all depends on your pastimes. I'm an alchemist and a sorcerer, so working with herbs is a good way to pass the time. The library here isn't bad, but the few books I've found on topics I wanted information for weren't exactly ...

Well, screw it, I couldn't even read the damned things.

[Alternian Troll treatises on their culture and biology were less than accessible reading. Especially since a lot of them had the same quirks the trolls themselves did.]

[He found the Alternian stuff pretty interesting, if pretty mind-boggling.]

Mostly I'm interested in magic.

[They were in agreement, though she found anything written about them to be basically just confusing gibberish. Trolls were the best sources.]

Alladin. You and Alladin should talk. Kid's running some sort of sorcerer's guild or something similar. He and Merlin are the ones around here that have people working together on what they can with magic. A lot of it seems to have died here, other than the powers we're granted and things like these herbs.

[Now that catches his attention! Sorcerer's guild would definitely keep him occupied for a while.]

[She nodded and held up a hand for a second. Walking out, she collected one of her maps from the back room and brought it out before spreading it out on the counter, motioning him over to it.]

City's got a lot of locations that look like there's old ley lines, old paths where the magic of the land used to flow. I've tried mapping them. Little hit and miss, but I picked this spot for the shop along where some of the lines connected.

Every time they connected, there's old places that look like they used to have magic shops, things like that. Not easy to tell how, or why, but those things don't work anymore. The herbs still have power, but it's really limited. It's like the life got drained out of this world.

Might make sense, considering how a lot of the natives are. Gray and lifeless.

Yeah, I think you're right. Been trying to do the whole emotions things to wake up the lines around this area. It's hit and miss, but if Loki gets back up completely then this place has as much of the juice as it can, and we can see if that helps any.

I don't know for sure what magic they had before, but Alladin's been looking into runes they used to use.
