IC Inbox - Asgard Eventide

An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

Please... the doctors get the real credit. I just helped out with putting the med together and some of the testing... [She was definitely uncomfortable taking credit on this.]

Hanako... look, I really don't like you losing a friend over me, Hisao. [Her jaw started to set and she glared at him, obviously bothered.] She's right to be worried. It's not like I'm doing anything to go nuts right now, but does that really matter? I'm not safe and she's not wrong to be mad that you're doing something dangerous, especially after the other day... I don't care if we ever find a cure or just manage to get me locked up every time. I'm not safe.

Why do you keep coming back, or are you just that stubborn?

Yeah. I know you're dangerous and really most other people would think I was nuts. And I'm obviously pretty upset about losing her friendship. But I'd wind up hating myself if I dropped our friendship over something like this. As much as she's right - and I did apologize for blowing off her warnings initially - I can't let her dissaproval over things affect me to the point where I cut people out. That would be... I mean, I'm my own person, right? So, I can make my own choices about who I spend time with.

You're working toward making things safer and that's what matters. You helped the city in it's time of need by helping with the antedote - even if you say it was mostly the Doctors, you obviously helped. Despite anything else you're a good person ninety nine percent of the time and I value our friendship.

[she wrapped an arm around one leg and grunted. The 'principle of the thing. He really was the sort who had a stubborn streak to him, wasn't he? She had trouble understanding it, though she did understand wanting to make her own choices.]

I'm only going to not shout at you over this on the condition that you don't lose a friend over it. I already told you that. You can't just give up on her as a friend. You are being a little nuts, more than a little really, but you can't just give up on someone else for the principle of the thing. So you haven't lost her, or I really will be upset. You just need to keep trying. Be patient but keep trying.

[She sighed and ran her other hand through her forehead.]

Oh you cannot possibly be serious. You actually CALL it Ahab's Crosshairs? That's it Captain. You're Ahab from now on, and I'm your damned white whale. And if you think you're going to use your hands to get me on my knees, you've got another thing coming buddy.

What the hell is a lusus anyway? Is that something you hunt, or do you mean to tell me you ride a seahorse in the ocean? Your story makes less sense all the time.

I'm not giving up. I'm hoping she'll come around and at least talk to me some time soon. She really means a lot to me - I couldn't just give up on her if I tried. But she's... you have to have patience with Hanako. Push too hard and she retreats that much further. I've learned over time that when she's upset, it's best to leave her be. I have other friends who are making sure she's eating and she seems to be active in the community still which is a lot better than back home, where she'd lock herself away for days and forgo food and sleep...

And of course you're a good person. I haven't seen you kick a single puppy yet.

[A small smile - it's intended as a joke, despite being a little dry and a little lame.]

Hah... ok, that one's kind of funny actually. But, good. I'm glad she's got people to take care of her in the meantime. Hopefully this will figure itself out eventually.

Preferably before this all turns into a warzone.

[But, she doesn't speak any more on it, since her sympathy is genuine, certainly, but there are more important things to talk about] What do your urges when you're influenced by your other side generally entail?

[Talk of sympathy was just ignored. In truth, it made her uncomfortable, but she was used to people giving it even if pitchforks and torches made more sense. The rest, however, was more straightforward. She didn't like it, but she'd ceased avoiding some of the topic with most people. Life was easier if they understood.]

Succubi are sexual predators. They devour the souls of people they've led into sin, vice and depravity. That part of me gets off on doing blasphemous, horrific, violent and sexual things. She teases, torments, offends, mocks and destroys. What specifically depends on her mood at the time.

So, basically, I turn into a predator with a taste for violent, depraved kinks and with destructive tendencies.

[He leaned back on the seat, satisfied that the elephant in the room was trundling off elsewhere.]

Well, my boss, Ayame, wound up being sent home. He left his boutique to one of the employees who's a friend of mine too so we're going to try and keep it running if it's possible.

I'm sad that he left, of course. But we're going to do our best to keep his vision alive here in case he comes back.

[She nodded. It seemed that there was a regular flow of people in and out of this. She wondered a little what it was that made one stay and others go, why some seemed to remain almost indefinitely, while still others appeared, disappeared and reappeared again without memories. More proof that the gods must be crazy.]

I suppose, in a way, it's the whole topic of 'doing this because this is the sort of thing we're fighting for,' isn't it? You keep things like this alive around here to make there be some purpose in folks fighting the good fight. That, or it's just to honor a friend's memory. Both decent enough reasons.

[And she's still not phased at all, nodding along with a serious expression, but it's one that's like she's trying to commit each word to memory rather than anything judgmental]

Understood. Then it would seem isolation would be best, but finding such a location could prove to be difficult...

[She looks thoughtful as Diana immediately considers a location, but smiles, remembering that there are other people to consider]

Isolation's the best call if I can't find some other way to control it. I'm trying, but it's best to assume other ways won't work until I know for sure.

[She shrugged uncomfortably.]

I tried being evasive when I got here, just telling people to stay away. They always insisted on asking why. When I didn't give all the details, some stupid bastards went and tried to 'help' me during my first episode. Being up front's a lot easier. Saves me headaches and gives better odds of stopping the third in its tracks.

Samantha, I have some good new and a bit of bad news about the runes.

Alright then, well, let's start with the bad news first. I prefer to get the crap out of the way whenever possible.

While I was in Utgard I found out that runic magic use was common before the grey set in. When the grey set in, use of runic magic went out.

There probably isn't enough magic to use runes properly.

[She frowned, her eyes narrowed. Something of what he said made perfect sense, and yet underlying it was another truth. It made her both very deeply offended and at the same time intrigued.]

Yet.

Alladin, we're fixing the grey bit by bit. The more it goes away, the less it's present. So, in theory if we can get the magic in this city back up and running...

Yes, once the grey is completely gone. [He noticed the connection as well. ]

Until it's gone, I'll bet we can build back some levels. The herbs might get more effective too. Did you learn about any other forms of magic here?

I'm still searching for another type, but I haven't found anything just yet.

[Not that the bad is out of the way time to get to the fun part.]The good news is that runes are very much possible.

There were all sorts of them and things in Utgard it was amazing! Thanks to that visit I now have a few arrays done.

One is for channeling and storing magic.

... wait, so they can still be crafted and work here in Asgard, but we can't fashion them here? Is that what you're...

[Chanelling, storing magic. Samantha went for her maps and pulled them out, looking them over and grunting.]

What do you think? Could those types of runes be used to increase the power of the ambient magic, re-invigorate the ley lines of a district?

[Someone was getting the idea to experiment.]

To be fair, we are expected to branch out and meet others here... It's hardly a surprise that people would be curious, myself included.

But we'll see what we can do to help you.

I was wondering why you were brain deficient you glorified sea monkey. This is all starting to make a whole lot more sense. Just add water, and the brine shrimp gets delusions of grandeur.
