An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

[He looked back at her, honestly a little surprised. He knew she felt responsible, but he hadn't asked her to provide a fix. He'd taken that upon himself.]

....Samantha, I really appreciate that...

[He had half a mind to tell her not to. That she had enough to worry about herself. And that was true, really. But she sounded so sincere, he didn't have the heart to say no to her offer.]

...And anything you can think of would be just great.

I have to somehow find a way to make it so I'm not as much a danger to you. She's mad because you're putting yourself in danger, right? I... if you're going to be stubborn, then I just have to find some way, either getting locked up or something else or both, to not do what I did to you ever again. [much less worse]

Well, something will be figured out, I'm sure. Just so long as it's nothing that hurts you - Obviously I'd hate to think of you being harmed, even in your Other state. I mean, it was all I could do that night not to try and heal your bite wound before getting out of there.

....how's that healing up by the way?

I got whatever was done taken care of after I was more lucid. As much as I'd prefer not to, she took a hunk out of my arm, so it was harder to just ignore. Everything's pretty much taken care of. Just a little scarring.

...odd, really. Not used to having scars. Don't worry, though. I'm not suicidal. As much as I think the world's better off without me, it's not in my nature to go and do something that stupid or get myself in a situation that's just as bad. We'll find a way that doesn't overdo it.

[Hisao looked a little green at the memory, swallowing hard.]

Yeah that was really... something. Ugh.

Well, I'm glad we're on the same page there. Safety is important but it has to be safety for everyone, including you.

She... has her own demons to struggle with. I wish I could help her more, but she frightens me at times, and I feel bad about that. It's very hard for me to associate with half demons.

[She didn't fully agree about her safety, but she also wasn't the sort to just put her head on the block, so it was an easy request to go along with.]

I'll admit I find her pretty scary myself. I tried talking to her when she first arrived and she made it kind of clear it wasn't exactly welcome. I mean, all I saw was a person with arms that looked like they'd been injured, so... I mean, my instinct was to offer to help. I think she took that the wrong way or what have you so, after a few tries at conversation I kind of gave up...

She's... something you need to keep in mind when dealing with a half-whatever is that we usually get really touchy about things. The whys vary, but I've noticed most of the others I've seen are like this. We're not entirely in one world or another, and with half demons especially, there's usually some deformity involved.

In my world, demons mating with humans make for what are basically deformed monsters. It's not that different for her. She's a lot like Painwheel in that she doesn't like people trying to get close to her, doesn't seem to understand it, and to top it off she seems to have a very... old fashioned way of looking at things.

It can make her really hard to talk to.

Painwheel I've been able to get through to at least. I haven't seen much of her lately but we agreed to meet for lunch one day and I said I'd cook for her. Regina... Yeah. There's a really big wall there that I'm just not able to get past. And I mean, it's frustrating in a way but it's her right to chose who she does and doesn't talk to. So, I've just backed off. I really do want to thank her for her role in helping me out of there, though.

It is her right, yeah. Something I want you to remember, too, is that you can't save them all. That's not your job. Some of them have to walk their own path. Everyone does, really.

Save them....? Ah. I see what you mean. No, I'm not trying to 'save' anyone - don't misunderstand me. I went through a short lived phase of that mentality but lost it quite a while ago.

It's not about saving people. Believe me, I'm in no real shape to 'fix' anything for anyone! But if I can make anyone's day a little better by being there for them then that's something. There's a lot of things I can't do - that's one thing I think I'm pretty alright at.

[She could be such a hypocrite about these things herself, so she didn't have much room to be talking.]

Heh. I'm either insanely lucky to have a friend like you around, or insanely unlucky. One of these days, someone's going to fall in love with you with an attitude like that, and you're going to drive them absolutely insane.

Heh - Hopefully it's lucky. As for the love part, that would be nice though I could do without driving anyone insane!

Let's hope for lucky, yeah. Somehow, though, I think love's pretty much insanity no matter what.

I wouldn't say that. At least, I hope it isn't. I can see where some of the paralells can be drawn I guess.

Well, this is me we're talking about. Anything romance-related with me is bound to have a little more insanity than the average.

I guess there IS that. I mean, I wouldn't call it insanity. Just.... there's some specific challenges there. That doesn't really change much though because everyone comes with a set of specific challenges.

I ... think for you, you're probably just dealing with the normal craziness and a worried partner about your health. It probably wouldn't be insanity. You'll be fine. I'm mostly kidding around about the crazy for you. Me, I'm starting to think I'm not hard-wired for what you'd call normal, healthy relationships. The one time I got desperate back home was just... seriously screwed up, short and co-dependent, and the one stable thing I had I think we hated each other more than anything else.

Maybe it's the demon in me. I don't know.

I don't know - I mean, I've never even BEEN in a relationship and I may never be. But I think, from what I do know, lots of people get involved in short lived, messy relationships that don't end well and come back just fine. Eventually you'll meet someone who really cares and is able to deal with your other half one way or another. I'm sure of it.

I... kind of already have, but it's weird, and I don't know if it will work. [She sighed and rubbed her forehead. The irritation built when she thought directly about him.] It's not a normal relationship though. I don't know how to explain it other than he's... kind of a rival, only not. We're still feeling this out, and I'm not completely convinced this isn't a wretched, stupid, horrible idea that's going to end terribly in the long run.

[The look on his face is happy even if her description is... kind of less so.]

The idiot's name is Eridan Ampora. He's arguably the most irritating, egotistical half-witted example of a troll that I've ever met. He's also very difficult to get off of my head and ... his fins are kind of cute.

If you tell him I said that, I'll let the evil side out on you. [she gives a little smirk, not unlike she knows that last bit shouldn't be taken seriously even if it was meant that way.]

Trolls... they're strange. Romance, or some of it, is rivalry, violent. I'm... still getting a hang on the rivalry part. He really is irritating as hell, but he actually seems interested, and he hasn't given up even knowing the crazy part. It... doesn't hurt that they're all violent as is, so as long as he survives and grows back, it's... well...

It's probably ok in the end. It cuts me some slack.

[Now there was an interesting concept. He'd been expecting... well. Someone Human. But then again, she wasn't Human herself in entirety so...]

I haven't met that particular troll, so, I'll keep your finny comment nice and private. But when you say romance is violent and stuff, you're not expecting him to hurt you, are you?

[One of those curious things about Samantha that people might never have noticed was that she had never been particularly picky in terms of race, gender or species. She distrusted 'demons' automatically, but even then she still was not particularly prone to caring that much. To her, species really didn't matter in this regard.

The why of it, however, could be harder to get out of her.]

I am. We already have, actually. I had to get a little patched up before, but there's supposed to be a rule with them about how you're not supposed to go too far. It ruins all the fun, or something, if you break your rival and there's nothing left to play with after. Then you don't have a rival anymore. It's... a fine line.

I thought about Gamzee initially, a while back, when he bashed me upside the head. Far as I could tell, though, most of them didn't seem to think that he knew how to hold back. I'm not sure it would have worked out well there, since he might have tried to kill me. Eridan? I'm pretty damned sure that's not what he wants.

[She shivered a little, part of her a touch revolted, and part a little excited. She had a few ideas what Eridan wanted.]

But, like I said, he's got regeneration, and I can patch myself up from minor issues on my own and I guess I really don't mind a few little scars now and then... So him hurting me's fine, as long as well... how do I...

As long as he's really out to hurt me, if that makes sense.

No. No, it doesn't actually make any sense at all. To me. But, I mean... so long as you're happy? I mean, if that's.....

...if that's what you want then I hope it works out. I don't understand it but I'm not about to judge. Just... if you ever need to get any kind of healing just let me know. I mean, I'm level two now so... so long as he's not breaking your bones or knocking out teeth we should be OK....?
