An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

[She sighed and nodded.]

It went bad. Muspelheim... god only knows what it's like right now with the volcano still going, and with their entire army trying to conquer Alfheim in desperation, but it was a ragged, hellish mess when we arrived. The city was all but vacant, and they were fighting against each other constantly.

We found the Apple we were seeking, one of Iduun's apples of eternal youth, but it was in one of the few really secure places. Eridan and I died getting there. The rest I know from their reports afterwards. Temari was the only one that made it out. Surt apparently showed up, and the others kept him busy while she fled with the apple.

Brutal... but simple. [She's obviously leaving out a lot of details, but it was the condensed version.]

[Merlin winces, drawing up a seat for himself. This could take a while, not that he’d expected any less.]

Surt showed up…does he know why you and the others were after the apple?

[Merlin frowns.] Actually, how much do the others know about the ingredients you’ve been collecting?

We don't know. What I do know is that he wasn't concerned enough to chase after Temari. That says either that he doesn't believe it can be done, or he doesn't realize the true value of what he had. I'm willing to bet the latter.

[She shook her head.]

Or he thinks he has bigger concerns, which is possible. As for the rest, they know they're related to a weapon, but only Desmond of our new recruits really seems to fully understand. Temari did... but she's disappeared, almost as soon as I got the apple. [She sounded bitter as she said that, an annoyed look in her face.]

[dragonspeak]

He might have thought it was a scouting mission, like the one some Travellers went on in Utgard. [He grimaces as he remembers how badly Thiazi had wounded them when they were caught.]

Temari...do you think her disappearance has anything to do with the apple?

[samantha_grey]

No. I believe Hel in this. I don't think they control the path back that well. I'm not even sure that they completely control the path here. They issue a call, and people come.

And he might have thought that. I'll take it if he did, and that we were just going for something valuable, but not that valuable. It's not as if they know the method. The well itself wasn't even sure of it.

[dragonspeak]

Right, so it's all safe. For now.

[That's reassuring to know, even if it's all speculation. But, now he can bring up the other reason he'd called her here.]

There's actually--something else that I wanted to talk to you about.

Well, with that out of the way, I'm all ears. What's going on?

Remember the potion Euri, Draco, and I made to help take down the dragons?

I tried one of the herbs--the one that weakens fire--on the Giants in Alfheim. It worked somewhat.

[samantha_grey]

You're thinking of putting something together, targeted to the fire giants and the frost, aren't you? [She scratched her chin.] Yeah, I'm in.

[dragonspeak]

[His mouth opens and closes before he smiles ruefully.]

You guessed it. I suppose it was fairly obvious once I brought up Alfheim. Yeah. I want to find more of these herbs and maybe something else to counter the ice. If we had something like this, maybe we'll have more of a chance.

I definitely want to see what we can pull together in that vein. Consider me in on this one. I'll get in touch with you in a little while, and we can go over herbal properties, unless you have time now.
