An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

Eh? Pinch of Sage? Yeah. I'm the owner of the shop. We do medicines, herbal cures and alchemy. There something I can do for you?

Yes, I was wondering how you were able to get magical herbs and materials for alchemy.

Standard crap's pretty much available from the markets in town. Prices vary depending on the district, so it's good to shop around a bit. The magically active plants come in from Utgard or the Alfheim folks. They won't sell to you if you don't have a license, which takes about two weeks of red-tape over at Utgard and a test to get through. If you know a lick about alchemy and how not to blow yourself up, you'll be fine on the test.

Thankfully my teacher taught me the basics so I should be about to get one.

Though do they also sell materials for magical crafting and enchantments.

I have a workshop and an alchemy lab over at my guild it would be a waste if my members and I couldn't use them.

Like I said, you can get basics. Enchanting I don't know about. That's an ongoing imbued spell, I'd assume. Since that sort of magic doesn't exist here, just the powers they give us. The plants are just lingering bits of magic still in this world, weaker than the powers we get. But, you can get most of the plants that are around through Utgard. Fire blossoms, however, I found through the elves. Euridice knows of a few others, but she's not too likely to share them. [They were mostly poisonous.]

You'll just need to set up an appointment for the test. Usually take a week or two. Just paperwork, really.

Actually I've found a book on from this place that items can absorb amounts of ambient magic harmlessly from the world. If you have a few special tools, materials, and runes. I wasn't to sure how to get them.

I should be able to get an appointment, hopefully they don't have an age limit for it.

Hmmm. [She tapped one of her maps.] What district is your place in? I should send you a map I've made of the apparent ley lines in the district if you're looking to absorb ambient magic. The runes I can't help you with. It's out of my expertise unless they're ogham and actually obey celtic rules from my world, which I doubt. However, places that used to have strong magic I might be able to help with.

You're going to want to activate them as much as possible though, I'm betting. Get people to interact with them so the colors return enough that the lines are at a more full charge, if that makes sense. At least, that'd be my guess.

Actually the Guild hall is located in Freyr district, near the Draupnir and quite a few a artisan shops. So there are normally quite a few people about.

There should a good amount of magic being given off already in the guild thanks to Ms. Freya. I'd be quite thankful for the a map though. Then

[A copy of the map is sent easily enough. Freya was one of the later districts that she'd gotten to, after she'd lost touch with Machiavelli. He'd paid her at least, which had given her every reason to continue and make sure the project was finished. She kept the full map inside of her shop for reference.

The criss-cross of structures implied that many of the locations were old magic shops, places that had been used for similar functions in the past. Good odds were that if he was following Freya's guidance in some fashion, he'd probably chosen well.]

Taking the god's help won't hurt you, no question. I trust them as far as I can throw them, but they've got power. Get the whole grid up if you can. I think if we can get all of the grids back online the magic in the city may be more potent in general.

In the meantime, if you need a couple samples of the active plants, I can spare everything but the fire blossoms. I've got limited supplies of those for making healing poultices. Drop by in the next day or two and I'll show you the rates. Since you need them unprepared no doubt, I'll shave a little off the top, but keep in mind these things're a premium over in Utgard so ... well, you get the idea.

[A thought suddenly occurred to Samantha and she smirked a bit. There might be some use in this venture after all.]

Actually... I was curious about those runes you mentioned. Could they be used to strengthen the magic in an area possibly, or to collect and pool it?

Theoretically yes, both should be possible. In fact I know my teacher made tools back home that were just for storing her excess magic.

I'll need to study how runes work here to see if there a way to replicate it.

Let me know what you find out. Magic doesn't work in this place like it does in my world, at least not entirely. So I'm assuming these runes aren't any different, and they'll do things their way.

In your world do you use foci to cast magic? In a way each rune is like a little foci and putting them a lot together is like casting a magic circle.

It's probably not exactly like that, that's how magic is cast in my world. [It could be one of the reasons he's so happy about finding out about runes.]

Varies, a lot. Focuses and spell components aren't unheard of, but there's a lot of different schools of thought in mysticism in my world. Getting a consistent sort of thought isn't exactly easy out of anyone who uses spells, however.
