An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

[She recognized the name at least. There was a wry grin when he said it and she motioned towards one of the tables before walking back into the other room. She was out in a few seconds.]

I've got water brewing up. We can sit until the whistle goes off. I think I promised you tea, right?

[Ah, at least she didn't seem to comment on the fact he's a tiny kid who sounds way too much like a grown up, which was a nice change. Moving over to sit in a chair!]

Would prefer coffee, but tea's fine too.

[She's starting to get used to seeing kids with weird powers in this pace. When he makes the request, she nods and gets a small packet out and slips back out with two cups that were steaming something that smelled thick and foul.

She liked her coffee really black.]

Coffee it is. So, how're you settling into this place?

Well enough, even with the outbreak of a plague.

Yeah, that. I was out for an entire day recovering from the stims I took. The assholes outside this city finally guaranteed I care enough that I want to see them gutted before I get around to dealing with the ones inside.

Stayed shut in inside the whole time. I've barely been here for a week and this shit happens.

It's not constant, but you can assume some shit's going to happen every week or two, though usually not this serious. I think the giants are finally rolling their sleeves up.

Plague's a pretty good example of that sort of tactic, but I'd expect it's coming hard and fast at this point. I doubt a pot shot like that's something they'd do just for fun.

Figures I'd show up when things are getting worse. They don't seem like the kind who'd do that for shits and giggles, no.

Nah, that's pretty much just Loki. He's kind of an ass, and so's Baldr. Just a heads up. Actually, they all kind of ar, but those two are more likely to show up on your radar early.

The gods are all assholes. Not surprising.

Most supernatural beings where I come from are assholes, so I'm not exactly shocked that they act like it. Your world the same way?

I'm one of them, so yes.

[And any thought about asking about age went out the window. He was either nuts, or he'd been on the upper end of the totem pole at one point. That wouldn't be the first time she'd seen this either.]

How far up the command chain were ya, if you don't mind me asking one asshole to another? I was pretty much at the bottom... as in half-breed of a piece of crap underling bottom.

[No one said he couldn't be both, though. ...Not that he was actually crazy, but that depended on how one looked at it. This is where he hesitates though, because he isn't sure he wants to explain what being a "god" was back home.]

Pretty high up. I didn't even have a real body, just happened to be energy concentrated enough to imitate one.

Ah. Your world handles that sort of thing differently. Everything where I came from had a physical body except the really rare ones. But I'm betting every world's different.

Probably. Fairies work the same way too, and they're fucking everywhere.

Faeries? You mean the kings under the hill or little butterfly-winged pixies fluttering around?

The latter. They're irritating pests at best, unholy terrors at their worst.

... [Those were just in picture books for her most of the time. The Tuatha were more what she knew of with the fae, and even they hadn't made much of an appearance for ages.]

Yeah, if they're the sorts of stupid tricksters stories used to make them out to be for us, they'd be a pain. I know illusions enough to know I hate illusionists.

They're irritating because they're stupid. Bastards have almost no sense of danger or restraint, which is why they're also dangerous.

Well, I know this is going to sound a little on the stupid side, but they are fairies. They've got brains the size of thimbles. You wouldn't expect much from a bird either, I'd bet.

They don't even have brains. And even birds have some survival instincts.

Heh. You've got some really stupid pixies and nixies then. I'd offer my condolences, but at least you don't have to deal with that crap here, just other sorts of crap.
