Personality
Sam is a defensive, abrasive, stubborn and self-centered woman with a dark and cynical sense of humor. She is awkward in social situations, blunt to a fault and prone to making hip-shot judgments about people that can be hard for her to give up on. She is rarely impressed and tends to frown frequently with strangers. Even when she has warmed up to someone, her abrasive side is hard for her to overcome. Underneath her bullish exterior, Samantha struggles with body consciousness issues and the general wish to be better than the demonic blood that boils inside of her would have her be. She makes friends fairly slowly, but once she has decided that a person is worth being a friend of, she can be intensely loyal, and will go out of her way to help and protect them, oftentimes at great risk to herself. She has developed something of a self-righteous chip on her shoulder about being a 'hero,' and views a life of service to others as the best way to make up for those times she has lost control to her demonic side. Samantha's history is one full of tragedy and pain, horror and self-loathing. Though she has found peace with what she is, and a purpose in her life in serving others, she still struggles with fears that stem from years of torture at the hands of her father. She is, as a result, an emotional mine field for the unwary, as unexpected issues may cause her to react very poorly, and drive her to sudden bouts of melancholy or anger. Samantha is a devout worshiper of the Tuatha de Danaan and follower of the philosophy of Thelema. It causes her to come off as pragmatic and prone to actions others might consider unethical in the name of whatever task she has put her mind to. While she dedicates her life to the defense of others, how she goes about it and the short-cuts she takes tend to make others uncomfortable, and she is rarely concerned about issues usually of importance to most of the western world. |
Short History
The daughter of a mortal woman and an incubus, Samantha was raised in seclusion by her mother Naomi in a desperate effort to keep her away from both hateful humanity and her father, the Duke of Thieves Valefar. Her mother's efforts to control Samantha's demonic side and avoid Valefar's notice ultimately failed on her 19th birthday. She sent her daughter away barely in time to escape his wrath, though the archfiend would seek Sam out and capture her. He initiated two years of torture, the likes of which she had never imagined possible. Fusing her spirit with the souls of his vanquished enemies, Valefar trapped her own soul and used their energy to twist and corrupt her mind. Every time she would die, he would use their connection to bring her back to life with magic he stole from the angel Uriel, using the madness that each death caused in an effort to try and drive her completely insane. In the first year of her flight from Valefar's influence, Samantha struggled desperately against the influence of the demons he had fused with her body. She died several times at the hands of horrific monsters such as the naga Janine. Only in joining a martial arts tournament by sheer accident of her father's interference did she find the company of others who might begin to help her seek peace with herself. Notable among them was the vampire hunter and assassin Dusk. The two initially hated each other and sought to kill one another, but with time they began to see commonality in their shared hatreds for monsters. Their bond was awkward at best, but when Dusk died, Samantha could not accept the loss of one of her only friends after losing her mother. She began to focus herself on rescuing her friend's soul from the bowels of hell, sacrificing a piece of herself to accomplish the feat. Increasingly, as she drew nearer to finding her friends' soul and drawing it forth into life, Samantha became more aware of the world around her. She was far from the only person with inhuman powers. So-called "Deviants" plagued humanity with their personal agendas, some seeking to protect their fellow man, while others sought to control and dominate them. Their wars nearly destroyed humanity in the wake of a demigod named Omega's rise and fall. The events forced her to accept a broader part in the fate of the world. Samantha sought relief from the cycle of violence, horror and death with the aid of several allies and friends she met along the way. Caught up in the battles and heroics of other gifted and supernaturally powered figures, she ultimately joined with a group known as the "Thunder Force" and found with them both the service that would help give her penance and help controlling her demonic nature. Their aid was enough to keep her spirit safe as her father hatched his final plans, aiming to sacrifice her for power and ultimately unleashing the one surviving demonic spirit inside of her, the demon seer of sloth Diffido. Fleeing its wrath as he died, she rescued the spirit of her mother and dedicated her life to protecting the world from supernatural horrors such as those she had faced. | |
