Samantha is the daughter of Naomi Grey and the “Duke of Thieves,” an incubus by the name of Valefar. Raised in a closeted and sheltered life within the deep West Virginian mountains, Samantha knew little of her father or the world beyond outside of history books. Her life in her earliest years was surrounded by the fae, spirits of the land and a lush, overgrown farmland tended by she and her mother. She was taught medicine, alchemy and magic in keeping with old Celtic and Crowleyan traditions. As time went on and her succubus instincts blossomed, her mother first taught her meditation to help control those urges, but eventually succumbed to an incestuous relationship to keep her safe and close. This idyllic but twisted world collapsed when, on her 19th birthday, Samantha's father came to find her. Naomi forced her daughter away a mere hour before his attack and perished at his hands, her soul trapped in a gem afterwards. Samantha herself was caught soon afterwards and subjected through her dreams to a similar fate, her soul trapped and the souls of other demons placed within her in a perverse and convoluted ritual Valefar hoped to use to sacrifice her later for greater power for himself.

Fleeing her father's ministrations, Samantha soon learned the dark reality of her existence. With demonic spirits attempting to corrupt her, and her soul in the hands of her father, she could not trust her own mind and even death offered no solace or relief. When she died, her father would simply bring her back from the dead, continuing the process of trying to corrupt her, leading to a string of ghastly and unfortunate circumstances in the first months as she warred with urges she had only barely been taught to control. She remembered little of the next few months, other than that many individuals died at her hands and worse was done to her. Profound fears like her fear of snakes came from this period, some which she outgrew but many that she did not. Initially she lost any hope for rescuing her mother, slaying her father or finding freedom for herself seemed a lost cause.

Matters began to turn when Valefar allowed her to resurrect at a tiny island off the coast of Ireland. The site was the center of a martial arts tournament run by a naga referred to as Viper, a violent and power-hungry kingpin that her father hoped would damage her psyche still more. Though many in the tournament were super-powered scum, Samantha fell in more with the few heroes there to overthrow the mad tournament. With difficulty, she found kindred spirits in a ghoul named Rufus Schwarzkreuz and a necromancer named Riese Kiffe. The latter was a friendship in only the barest of senses, the two arguing constantly until Riese was found dead, murdered by one of the other participants. Samantha, horrified by the girl's fate, vowed to rescue her soul somehow, barely understanding the feelings she felt for someone she barely knew and as much perturbed by the stupidity of the death. With a cause behind her, she fled the tournament in its final hours, barely escaping with her life.

Her escape from Viper's clutches brought Samantha into the broader world of so-called “Deviants,” people with unique powers greater than humanity. Surrounded by costumed vigilantes and villains, Samantha found herself repeatedly embroiled in their conflicts, battles over rights of Deviants and wars with powerful entities seeking to conquer the world. To her, much of these conflicts were futile and little more than a distraction that interfered with her as she sought the gates of hell and traveled into the depths to rescue Riese's soul. However futile and foolish these antics were, however, when she emerged from the depths she found that she was no longer able to avoid or pretend that these world matters could be ignored. Each successive year of conflict drew her farther from Riese and away from her own personal goals as villainous threats vied to destroy anything she might have hoped to save.

Ultimately, after the fall of the demigod Omega and the “Genocide Wave” that erupted in his wake, Samantha finally relented to what she perceived as a need within the world's community and herself. Through what she perceived as a life of service, she could gain the help to control her urges and fight back against her father. She applied for and was admitted to the reformed ranks of a global crime-fighting organization backed by US funding, the Thunder Force. Serving with them, she began the awkward effort to face off against common enemies, as much out of self-preservation as any real nobility of spirit. With their help, she has finally brought low Valefar, whose last plot hatched the remaining demonic soul within her, Diffido, and released it upon himself first and the world, and now she focuses her attentions on dealing with this threat along with the remainder of the Thunder Force's concerns.

(Asgard Eventide Specific Notes:) - Samantha, on two separate occasions, was trapped within another world's conflicts. Hardly the only time she was faced with alternate realities, the Asgard Eventide nevertheless carried with it a threat to all worlds and a wide assortment of strange individuals she had never seen before in her life. For months, she struggled with her involvement and railed against the gods of Asgard for having abducted her. Early on, with the assistance of Merlin and Eridan Ampora, she began a cabal that sought a means to fight back against the gods and giants without their intervention, a means by which she would be able to lash out against them if they proved as false as she feared.

The longer that she remained, however, the more Samantha became increasingly angry at the giants Surt and Thiazi and their tactics in the war. Though not an easy one to befriend, more than a year passed in Asgard and friendships were formed, along with a pair of noteworthy romantic entanglements with Eridan and Asuka Shikinami Langley. These ties caused her to care enough to side with the gods of Asgard, turning the weapon that she and Eridan helped forged against Thiazi and with their help bringing a telling blow that would lead to Ragnarock finally, though one that could not obey the rules as they had once been set. As Asgard reeled from the devastation of its apocalypse and rebirth, resetting its nature to reflect the changes of the travelers, Samantha and those who came with her finally left that realm, their task complete though not all questions answered.

PERSONALITY: Samantha is a brooding, hard-boiled and toughened individual who keeps people at arm's length on the occasions that she finds that she likes them, and further with almost everyone else. She is acidic and caustic, prone to swearing at random intervals and generally takes up personal habits that she believes will cause others to keep their distance and avoid her, while at the same time having a bad habit of being entirely too nosy about the business of those same people, and therefore always a little 'in your face.' Defensive, abrasive and stubborn, she is awkward in social situations and prone to making hip-shot judgments of others that she can find it extremely difficult to change once she's made them. Her sense of humor is awful, and shares much in common with the sort of humor that a mortician might have if they had the bad luck of finding inappropriate things funny all the time and she, even on good days, has difficulty dialing it back on those rare occasions it appears.

Her bullish and difficult exterior is an emotional defense mechanism, and one so deeply ingrained by her last few years of struggles that she can't easily turn it off. She forms opinions quickly and frequently buts her nose into other's business, but demures when others do the same for her, afraid they will see and hate the 'real her,' or worse, accept her and get hurt. She has lost friends and loved ones because of the volatility of her half-demon blood and thus can't bring herself to fully trust her ability to remain in control despite the fact that she has mostly reigned these instincts in. She struggles with massive body consciousness issues due to the fact that she is half-succubus. Because of her feeding and the possibility of a sadistic feeding frenzy if she does not maintain rigid control, she dislikes close personal associations and does not make them easily. The only person who ever truly loved her back was her mother, and their rather complicated and incestuous relationship is something she well and thoroughly understands should not be shared with most people. She wears what she is like a cross, uses it to push people away and struggles openly with her nature, both out of egalitarian wishes not to harm others but as much as anything to keep herself from becoming something that she does not wish to be.

Samantha is a survivor, someone who puts herself before others and whose selfless moments often have selfish motives. She has a tendency to be self-focused and almost a little egotistical. On the one hand, she can become angry at being under-estimated, while privately preferring it as it increases her chances of success. She is not altruistic by nature, being a worshiper of the Tuatha de Danaan and an active adherent to Thelema, the egoist philosophy of Alestier Crowley. Instead, her desire to help others or be a 'hero' stems from a wish to separate herself from her baser instincts and from mutual self-preservation. Ethically, Samantha has displayed an almost disconcerting lack of concern for traditional western norms, founded as they are on Judeo-Christian principles that neither she nor her mother had ever espoused. Though on many occasions, she will behave in a reasonable and ethical way by most peoples' standards, she can display alarming levels of personal freedom so long as she doesn't think she's harming others. She despises being controlled, but is subtle enough to let her grudges lurk if she knows she's up against someone well above her pay grade, planning for later carefully and quietly.

Love and emotional closeness are complicated issues for Samantha. Almost resolutely non-monogamous because she believes just feeding off one person is ultimately hazardous, Sam prefers to spread herself around so as to avoid feeding too much on one target. She does not feel she is 'cut out' for normal monogamy or marriages as a rule, though she is jealous of those who are. Love isn't impossible, but early stages are always difficult at best. Relationships centered on rivalry and conflict tend to do marginally better, but all the same she has difficulty making friends and even greater difficulty having romantic entanglements that are anything other than “Friends with benefits.” In those rare situations when someone gets past the business as usual and manages to somehow gain a close friendship, she becomes intensely loyal and both a touch possessive and invasive because of the rarity of it. For someone she considers a friend, she will go to almost extreme lengths to help them.

ABILITIES:
Biological: She is a half-demon, and as such does not age after sexual maturity and has a mild regenerative factor that can heal most non-lethal wounds in a few days, but not regrow limbs. She is slightly resistant to physical harm (both kinetic and energy-based), can see in the dark and has claws and fangs. She can 'feed' off of the life-force of someone during orgasm, and does not need to do so fatally. When she does this on a bi-weekly basis, she feeds on far less actual food (about ¼ normal for a carnivore), but if she does not do so regularly she can risk going into a feeding frenzy, though meditation helps her control. Her pheromones can help increase the libido of an already willing person.

Mystically: Samantha is a witch who relies mostly on illusions and skills in stealth and breaking and entering. Her illusions that can affect all senses and to some extent mystical perceptions. They can take a wide variety of forms, from illusion to false shapes, disguises and landscapes. She knows a smattering of attack spells (Frostfire, which creates blue flames that freeze instead of burn, and electrical attacks predominately). Her utility spells focus on teleportation, movement or assisting her in larceny and theft, and the few hexes she know are meant to weaken or hamper their movement. ( http://latroma.wikia.com/wiki/Samantha%27s_Spells has a list of her spells at her canon point.)

Alchemy: Samantha is also a skilled alchemist. Through travel to other worlds, she has learned to work with a wide variety of herbs and magical ingredients. Her potions are not as powerful as 'real' magic, but have the advantage of being bottled for later use, and include some recuperative potions. To make these potions she requires equipment, time and ingredients.

SINS & VIRTUES:
Virtue – Diligence: Of the sins, Sloth was the one who plagued Samantha the longest, and which she fought the most. Samantha openly defied the demon Diffido's influence as others gave her hope that she could somehow rise above her nature and defeat her father. Focusing her life on service to others and putting them first in her actions, she tried to overcome her demonic nature by actively becoming a public servant and focusing her life on others' needs. Through a life of forced altruism and public defense, constantly under scrutiny within the Thunder Force, she found a purpose that allowed her to be more than a predator and monster. She was lauded and used by team leader, the Mighty American, as a symbol of what was possible with the human spirit, and while she despised the level of public scrutiny privately, she appreciated how much it kept her on the straight and narrow to need to help others.

Sin – Pride: Samantha is a person who can turn Humility into a matter of pride. She carries the 'cross' that she bears as a public servant with a zeal that is downright irritating at times. For her, she 'needs' to be this thing so that she can be a better person, and she can get more than a little preachy and self-important. Even though she knows she isn't the center of the universe, she sometimes acts as if she is. She almost makes a game of griping about the press, the stupid little action figures, the uniforms and other things that come with the celebrity of being on the Thunder Force, privately relishing the attention and preening a little when she thinks nobody's looking.

SAMPLES
Sample 1 – From the Test Drive Meme
http://graveyardshift.dreamwidth.org/1070.html?thread=546350#cmt546350
(Brief Note: I have become aware, since starting the thread, that some of Samantha's powers and spells will need to be 'bought back' through the rewards system, so it is assumed that this thread occurs a little after her arrival, when she's managed this.)

Sample 2 –
The smell of a kretek cigar filtered up into the air, like sweet smelling incense. Samantha breathed in the heady vapor and shuddered once. It had been too hard to get these in Utgard. She'd had to start rolling her own, and as much pleasure as she could derive from a hand-rolled cigarette, only the Indonesians knew how to make a properly lung-destroying stick. Her body could take anything the tar in it dished out and throw it right back, so she'd always relished them. It wasn't about the nicotine, which barely even touched her, but rather the smell that covered her natural pheromones. It was relaxing not to catch a hint of sulfur in the air all of the time.

She looked into the room from the window she had cracked open to keep from getting caught. As much as she would have liked the haze to cover every inch of the room, Samantha was damned sure Sarah would get on her case about it if she did that. The woman was a bit of a neat freak, after all. Seeing someone opening the door, she grunted almost sourly. Of course, one of her only respites from being surrounded by people in this place would only last so long.

“You could knock, you know,” she said, fully aware she was in a fairly public place. At least it wasn't actually Sarah. The less she dealt with the Maeve for now, the better. It was always easier to hide any plotting she did if she didn't actually see the witches. “But if you're coming in, close the door. Don't need the smell getting into the hall. You can have one if you don't Narc on me.” As she said it, she gave a conspiratorial wink and flicked out the edge of one of the mini-cigars enticingly.

Gods, but she was terrible at this whole 'hero' business. Marcia would have tanned her hide for that line. But, in the end, if it wrecked someone else's lungs it wasn't any skin off her hide. They made their choice, after all.
