An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

[Tail swishing behind her, she led the way after locking the door behind Jane and grabbed a spot on the other side of the counter before waving at all of ... well, it really was kind of cramped.]

Most people hate it. Don't stay for long. Say it smells too strongly, but for me it smells more like home this way.

It's a little heady, but - it's almost like a kitchen in a way. Sort of.

[She catches sight of the tail and eyes it for a moment. Clearly there are things she should ask, but...that could come later.]

So does that mean you run an apothecary where you're from?

Yeah, I guess it does sound a bit lie a kitchen. [She laughed and leaned forward to talk.] But, no. My mom trained me in this sort of thing all my life along with magic. We lived on a farm. spent the last few years running for my life most of the time.

Not exactly good for business.

[...There's a lot there that pings Jane's interest, but she'll just file it away for now. Asking about why someone had to be on the run was a little impolite for a first meeting.]

No, I suppose it isn't. So, magic is a thing where you come from?

[samantha_grey]

A long forgotten thing, but there's definitely magic there. [She nodded.] Those who still follow the old ways are a rare sight anymore.

I see...and why is that?

[samantha_grey]

Short version? they lost the wars they got involved in. Long version's unpleasant and gets into religion. I'll spare you that one today. I'm a bit biased.

Oh. Alright, then. Those things do tend to happen...wars and losing, I mean.

[samantha_grey]

They do. And a lot of those who knew magic died. The old arts stuck around, but only in small cells.

I see...

[That sort of thing happens, too.]

Well! Um. It's good that it's still around?

[samantha_grey]

Heh, I'm pretty pleased to still be kicking it around. This place, though... I guess you'd call it my little haven in this madhouse. [She patted the counter.] When I feel like crap, I can just focus on work.

[Nods!] Work is definitely a good thing to keep focused on! I'm glad you have your shop, then.

mmm, yeah, same here. It's been a good thing in general. So, how long you been here anyway?

[cyan_maid]

How long? Um...not terribly long. A couple weeks or so?

[samantha_grey]

You're coping pretty well then. By that point I'd lost my bracelet and was wandering the streets like a gray person, and Satan owed me a drink

[Eyebrows going waaaay up.] Um...well, I can safely say that no one owes me a drink, Satan or otherwise.

So is that what happens if we don't wear these? We go grey, too?

[samantha_grey]

Heh, he wasn't that bad. Just kind of tired, really. It was... weird. But yes, you have a couple hours if you take it off before the gray sets in. I sometimes use it for a little privacy, but can't leave it off for long.

Can't you just...choose to not pay attention to the bracelet? It's a lot less risky that way.

Most days, but... I'm paranoid, and I don't like the idea that they might watch me through it all the time. Sometimes it's good not to have eyes on you.

[cyan_maid]

You mean the gods?

[Jane looks down to fiddle with her own bracelet.] Can that actually be done? Monitoring people through them, I mean.

[samantha_grey]

Loki personally runs it, and I ... I think it's part of him, because he gets weak whenever Thiazi attacks the network. So, I figure it's better safe than sorry.

Hmmm.

Well...I can't say I'm an expert on this sort of thing, but it might be a good idea to ask if it is? If this Loki doesn't mind questions about it, of course. The more you know, the better, right?

I might do that one of these days. [Blatant lie. The reason that she took her bracelet off was so that she could do debatably legal/ethical research she was certain the gods wouldn't approve of. She wasn't taking a chance with them wondering why she cared.]

Did you have anything else you were wondering so far?

[The lie is successful. Jane is none the wiser.]

Um...maybe more about this apothecary stuff? If you've got a shop dedicated to it, you've got to be good at it.

Oh, this? [She smirked and looked around.] I'd like to think I am, yeah. I never went to school, but my mom taught me everything about herbal cures and mixing potions I know that isn't from an experiment. Picking up the pharmacy stuff wasn't that hard with what she taught me.

The potions... those are sort of the pride and joy, though it's honestly the meds that pay the bills.
