[samantha_grey]

An old, brick edifice stands in front of the burnt-down ruins of a home in the hillside. Mountains rear up in all directions, covered in lush, green vegetation. Nobody comes this way anymore, but you have the sense that anything placed in the mailbox attached to this old structure will be found by someone, the only living person for whom this place still has any meaning.

Yeah, that really sounds like her. Sometimes, I honestly think she hides in her work to get away from all the things that worry her.

[She sighed and laughed a little.]

As long as she doesn't work herself too hard, it'll be ok.

Honestly? I think you're maybe right. Without going into details, the kid has been through a lot and I don't even know the full story myself. But her work ethic is amazing.

Yeah, she hasn't told me that much about her home life, though I caught a bit of a hint here and there. It's all pretty much her business, and not mine, but you ever see her looking like she's going to overdo it, bop her. She doesn't need to overkill this.

Don't worry - I do my best to remind her to have fun where she can. She's b een a good friend to me so I do my best to return the favor, even if it means telling her she should try something she finds counterintuitive.

Heh. You play conscience for a few people around here, don't you? So, who makes sure you listen to reason now and again. It sure as hell isn't me.

Satellizer has actually sat me down for a few talks about learning my place. You know - playing with the skillset I have, not the one I want. Other than that I guess I'm left to my own devices at this point.

[There had been Hanako's sage advice too but they'd already covered that.]

I ended up talking to her a couple times. Little spacy, but she's a nice enough person. And, as long as you've got some people around to watch your back, you should be fine. Is she from your world or did you meet here?

Spacy? Well, she's not really a big People Person so I can see how she might seem that way. No, she's from a different world - she lives in Japan but comes from Europe originally. She goes to a school called West Genetics where they basically modified her to fight giant aliens from another dimension.

First time we met, she kind of crashed into me. It was funny. Friendly but...

What?

God, that's like some of the weirder crap from my world. I kind of feel sorry for her then. Not a fan of getting conscripted into someone else's fight.

I'll admit I'm really not a fan of the idea either. But it's what she knows, so, I try not to let my distaste of the whole deal show. I think that's one of the reasons she's a little edgy around people... I know I would be too if I came from a situation like that.

Is she used to people not understanding, or is it more that she just doesn't know if she can really trust them? I could see either of those coming up a lot, or both.

Hmmm. I think she doesn't trust people much. She has a fear of being touched - you might have encountered that yourself if you bumped into her. I didn't realize and not long after we first met, she collapsed. I put a hand on her shoulder and she gave me a shot to the nose out of sheer instinct.

We... we really haven't met that much, Hisao. I'm not exactly afraid of being touched, but you might have noticed I'm kind of the same way. I think she wants to still be friends, but she's not really sure how to go about it with me. I'd let her just go, but she doesn't really seem to want to give up.

Somehow, though, I'm not entirely surprised she hit you. She might completely freak out if I touched her.

Oh, I know you're not a fan, but I didn't think you had the same aversion to it Satellizer or Hanako has. Neither one can stand it. Which took me a little getting used to - I've never really been around people who dislike a clap on the back or a handshake or whatever so...

[He gave a small shrug.]

-I- was sure as heck surprised. I'm just glad she hadn't figured out how to tap into that Thor House Strength yet. I might look something like a pug dog if she had. But if neither one of you is really fussed about contact... I mean, that works out well for both of you. You'll probably never have a problem, and she could really use some more friends.

Heh. You as a pug? That's kind of a funny thought, to be honest. You're right though. I try not to fuss... too much. As long as they're not trying anything, it's ok. Mostly.

I'm still getting used to this whole 'friend' thing. It's strange for me, but I'm getting there slowly.

Well then, it sounds like you have that in common too. She told me a little while ago I'm the only person here she really spends time with. Which, of course, made me feel a little guilty because my time is spread a little thin in general most days, and it's not even spread thin doing terribly exciting things. But there you go.

Really? I'm a little surprised. She seemed like a friendly enough person, all things considered. Just a little odd is all. See if you can get her out to meet some new people.

I'm going to do my best to do just that. And it's funny, you know? Sometimes she becomes extremely shy to the point where it's like she doesn't want to talk at all. Get her talking about certain things and she suddenly becomes all business. I've never seen anything quite like it - It's an emotional range of zero to sixty in under two seconds.

Well, if she had a strange way of living or got raised differently than most people, that might explain it. There's days when I don't understand much of why the people I see do things the way they did. I think part of that's just that I lived with one person most of my life.

I can imagine a sheltered upbringing like that would be cause for a lot of questions, sure.

[He had to wonder what her Mother was like. She'd have to be an extremly supportive person to have looked after a daughter who could do the things that Samantha could do. He really wanted to ask but thought better of it - For all he knew that would be a sensitive subject so better to leave it be and collect information here and there.]

I grew up in a pretty metropolitan area so I was exposed to a lot of things very young.

[If he ever asked, she had almost nothing bad to say about the woman. It was, however, a sensitive subject in its own way, but not impossible to talk about.]

Yeah, I got some of those questions out when I left home. There's still some that happen now and then. One of the first things was learning that big cities were good for hiding in, at least to an extent. Picking up the details, that takes time.

She'll figure it out eventually I bet.

You probably would have enjoyed my home town - it was really easy to get lost in. Like a maze with all those tall buildings and alleys and all the people. Watching people come out of the underground train station in waves still amazed me all the way up into my mid teens.

More than likely - I do hope so. She's really such a great person but if she doesn't give people a chance and they don't do the same for her, I think she'll just stay kind of lonely. Though I doubt she'd use that word.

Sounds a little like New York. It was a lot harder when I had wings, though a trenchcoat helped a lot. Generally avoided the subways though. There's ways to defend yourself in them, but usually too many people.

[She thought about it a little, considering Satellizer's situation carefully.]

She might not really mind being alone. If we really share that much in common, it wouldn't surprise me. Alone's not all bad at times.

Ah - You've been to New York? I really want to go there some day and try the food. I hear it's some of the world's best. And are the subways really that dangerous? Being the trains in Japan are so safe I'd always assumed it was kind of a joke. Like aligators in the sewers.

I know she doesn't mind being alone but... I don't know. I just hope that when she is, it's a choice she makes. Not something she does because she feels other options aren't open to her. Lonliness is pretty unpleasant in general but it can lead to other, more troublesome things and I wouldn't want that for her.

Part of what makes them unsafe doesn't apply to you. Tight little crowds like that are harder to hide brimstone and wings in. So I tended to not like cramped spaces like those. Some of the bums were a bit unpleasant, though.

And, it's probably good to be concerned. Just don't push too hard. She might bolt the other way in the end, you know. That wouldn't help anything.
